Researchers at the University of British Columbia and the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business found that impulse spending is a behavior associated with disorganized environments.

Shall we buy sausage and pepper at carnivals?

The study concluded that being surrounded by chaos impairs a person’s ability to perform other tasks requiring ‘brain’ power, which results in a threat to a person’s sense of personal control.

Good to have some scientific explanation about what street vendors of carnivals has known since they first set up their stalls in crowded venues. We can’t control ourselves once we lose control over our environment and buy up everything that even slightly tickles our fancy.

To buy or not to buy?

It seems that apart from street vendors, shops or rather marketing teams are also aware of such behavioral flaws of ours and many are taking advantage of it too. In fact, some of the shops, like book shops couldn’t even exist if shoppers only bought books that they had in mind when entered the store.

Not to mention the profit, shops make at petrol stations on overpriced sandwiches and soft drinks. The British oil giant BP may seem like an unlikely threat to convenience stores, yet according to reports half of their customers don’t even bother filling their tanks with gas while there, they only pop in to pick up some indispensable items for their household and leave.

Reason is no longer a deciding factor in the consumer world where flashy adverts persuade us about how cool or smart we’ll look if we buy the newest average reliability car and another almost identical phone, we had last year.

Can we get rid of ideas?

Once we buy into such brand messages though, it takes quite a time and effort to untangle ourselves from their reach if that is ever possible. Even if our experience with their product is less than desirable -just like with politics- once we feel deeply about a certain idea, we don’t tend to switch sides even if we don’t really like what they do.

When we are emotionally invested in an idea -such as a religion, political party, football team or brand- it has to go against our core values to abandon it again. Occasionally, we may be able to shift our core values too if something has a profound change on our life but that happens rather rarely and not without psychological efforts to maintain.

How to buy sausage and pepper?

Sausage and pepper is a classic Italian dish that consist of -as its name suggest- pepper and sausages. It is supposed to be a dish served on its own, but it seems, nowadays few can resist starching it up with something like pasta, potato or simply bread.

Although we shouldn’t really blame ourselves for longing something extra to have with our sausages because many of us first encountered with sausage and pepper stuffed into a bun while strolling through a street festival like, the Feast of San Gennaro.

What is sausage and pepper?

Interestingly sausage and pepper is a dish by itself and it doesn’t really need anything by its side to be enjoyable. It has bell peppers, onion, and many times some tomatoes, to juice things up a little.

It’s fairly quick to make -as anything that becomes a street food- in a skillet of any type but less adventurous cooks can try it in the oven too. It’s as tasty as any sausage can be and a bit more colorful.
