Do you know the sweet cinnamon rolls? Well, then you know this dessert too. It’s exactly the same except it is filled with chocolate instead of cinnamon. This is a perfect choice for any hot drink on a cold afternoon. Especially great with hot chocolate but probably you don’t need ideas regarding this. So you should invite your friends over to a nice afternoon or evening chat to spend some quality time with them. It’s worth to mention that this is a sugar free recipe but those who are not pursuing this diet have the freedom to mix sugar into the dough. Or even sprinkle some confectioners sugar on top of the pastries that makes them simply divine.

Ingredients:

Filling:

  • 2 tablespoon Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 7 tablespoon / 100g Butter
  • 2 tablespoon Agave or sweetener of choice
  • 2 oz / 50g Raisins (optional)

Dough:

  • 0.5 oz / 15g Fresh yeast
  • 1¼ cup / 300ml Milk or water
  • 5 cup / 600g Flour
  • 3 Eggs
  • 7 tablespoon / 100g Butter

How to make it:

Filling:

In a small bowl, combine the cocoa powder, butter and agave syrup. Whisk them well.

Pastry:

  1. Sprinkle the yeast into half cup of lukewarm milk or water. If it gets foamy that’s completely normal it shows that the yeast is working.
  2. In the meantime measure and put flour, eggs, butter and the remaining milk into a large bowl. Eventually pour in the foamy yeast and milk too.
  3. Knead the mixture until a soft dough forms.
  4. Cover top with plastic wrap and place in a warm spot until for half an hour.
  5. Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to a square.
  6. Brush filling onto the squared dough. Sprinkle raisins in top if you like them.Filling and dough - Chocolate Pinwheels - Suncakemom

  8. Cut crosswise into 1″ / 2cm wide pieces. (Clean knife after each slice to make it easier to cut.)
  9. Place the pieces apart on the baking tray (A baking sheet will be useful here.)Chocolate Pinwheels before baking - Suncakemom
  10. Cover and let them rise for about half an hour.
  11. Heat the oven to 350°F / 180°C
  12. Brush the rolls with egg yolk before placing them in the oven.
  13. Bake for about 25-30 minutes (depends on your oven) and take them out when they have a nice golden color.
